Hernandez Stepped Away In May After Facing Criticism For His Officiating

Umpire Ángel Hernández Retires from MLB

Hernández stepped away in May after facing criticism for his officiating

Hernández had not worked a game since May 9

Ángel Hernández, baseball's most infamous umpire, is retiring. Hernández, 62, has not worked a game since May 9, and his retirement was announced on Wednesday, August 3, 2023.

Hernández's first MLB game behind the plate this year was "okay except for the usual," according to Umpire Scorecards.

Hernández has been a controversial figure throughout his career, and he has been criticized by players, managers, and fans for his officiating. In 2021, Hernández was suspended for three games after he ejected St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt for arguing balls and strikes.

"It's just every year it's the same story," Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper said of Hernández in 2021. "Same thing."

Hernández's retirement is a significant moment for MLB, as he is one of the most well-known umpires in the game. It is unclear who will replace Hernández as MLB's most infamous umpire, but there are several candidates who could step into the role.
