How to Change Spark Plugs on a Toyota Tundra with the 4.7L V8
2000-2006 Model Years
Step 1: Remove the Ignition Coil
The ignition coil connects directly to the spark plug. This makes it convenient if you need to replace the coils and the spark plugs at the same time.
Locate the ignition coil for the spark plug you are replacing.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
Use a 10mm socket or wrench to remove the bolt that holds the ignition coil in place.
Lift the ignition coil straight up and off of the spark plug.
Step 2: Remove the Spark Plug
Use a spark plug socket or a 5/8-inch socket with a 3/8-inch drive to remove the spark plug.
Turn the spark plug counterclockwise to loosen it.
Once the spark plug is loose, carefully remove it from the cylinder head.
Step 3: Install the New Spark Plug
Apply a small amount of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new spark plug.
Hand-tighten the new spark plug into the cylinder head.
Use the spark plug socket or 5/8-inch socket to tighten the spark plug to 18 ft-lbs.
Step 4: Install the Ignition Coil
Place the ignition coil over the spark plug.
Insert the bolt that holds the ignition coil in place.
Tighten the bolt to 7 ft-lbs.
Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
Step 5: Repeat for Remaining Spark Plugs
Repeat steps 1-4 for the remaining spark plugs.
